Source Code Advocates
Including Source Code with Your Accounting Software
At Software Generation we have always been advocates for including source code when you purchase a system. Most system do not include source code. SBT Pro, Accpac Pro and Sage Pro included source code. Sage X3 includes most of the code and Sage has a policy of making the restricted source code available if you have a reasonable business reason to need it.
Let us explain why source code is important.
The source code is the set of instructions that a computer program follows. It is written in a specific programming language by programmers or developers. The source code is the foundation of any software application or website. Having the source code for applications can have many benefits, such as:
- Bug-fixing: If there are errors or problems in the software, having the source code allows you to identify and fix them. You can also hire any third party to help you with the bug-fixing, since the source code is open to all. (1)
- Customization: If you want to modify or enhance the software to suit your needs or preferences, having the source code gives you the freedom and flexibility to do so. You can also add new features or functionalities to the software. (2)
- Ownership: If you own the source code of the software, you have full control over it. You can decide how to use, distribute, or license the software. You can also protect your intellectual property rights and avoid dependency on the original vendor. (3)
Therefore, having the source code for applications can be important for software quality, security, and innovation.
